Born into slavery, Joshua Johnson worked as a portrait painter primarily in the Baltimore area. His portraits often depicted prominent individuals, including members of the upper class and political figures. Johnson’s style was influenced by the neoclassical tradition, and he demonstrated skill in capturing the likeness and character of his subjects.
