In a recent newsletter I talked about my inability to join in on the blogging trend to give tied-up-with-a-bow answers to life when it’s tough. Â I got lots of emails from readers telling me how much they could identify with what I was saying, and that they appreciated the honesty of just admitting that yes, sometimes things are hard and there is no nice, easy fix.
Sometimes the tough stuff is extraordinary: Â a health crisis, a financial difficulty, hurting relationships, or dealing with major life changes. Â More often the tough stuff is made up of ordinary life: Â The toilet’s not flushing right, the drier needs to be repaired, your 6 year old isn’t reading yet and you’re not sure how to help her, and you have no idea what’s for dinner tonite. Â When it comes to issues with the way we’re taking care of our family and our home, the guilt and worries can become overwhelming.
It can be really easy to get down on yourself. Â “What’s wrong with me?” Â “Why do I stink at this?” Â “Somehow I’ve got to get better at this.” Â “I’m failing!”
I probably don’t know a single mom that hasn’t felt like this at one time or another. Â You are not alone! One thing I do know is that it can be powerful and important to hear from others that can help us balance our perspective and restore our hope! Â So often what feels like utter failure at the end of a hard day (or in the midst of a hard week/month/year) is not quite so terrible as what you think it is.
While I’m not a fan of the Pat Answer Club, what I am a fan of is empathy, encouragement, and practical ways that we can help ourselves when the going gets tough.  One of the things that can help is simply connecting with other moms that understand what we’re going through.  Joining me on Periscope, Facebook, or my weekly newsletter can help.  I love to spend time other moms and keep it real and encouraging.  🙂  I hope we can connect!
I am very excited about this new grammar program from Dr. Melanie Wilson. Grammar Galaxy is a delightful and engaging story-based program that entertains your children while also painlessly teaching them English grammar!
The first book in the series, Grammar Galaxy: Nebula, is for beginning and early readers and writers. Â Designed to be done as a partnership between parent and their children, you’ll lead the way into the day’s lesson by reading a section of the story of the Evil Gremlin who is trying to destroy the Grammar Galaxy, and then the children will do their coordinating Mission to help save the galaxy, which includes worksheets, reading assignments, or projects. Â And guess what–it only takes about 10 minutes! Â So fun, and easy for everybody! Â I strongly suspect that your kids will be begging for more.
For those of you that love the living books approach of Life of Fred, I think you will find that Grammar Galaxy is a good fit for you.
Grammar Galaxy: Nebula is currently available. Â You can purchase print or digital versions. Â Check it out here.
I like to encourage parents to take advantage of local arts opportunities with their kids, and today I did just that. Â I took my 17 year old son with me to a senior voice recital for 3 high school seniors in our area. Â We were treated to Italian opera, English Art songs, and musical theater songs, and it was truly astounding and emotional. Â We scoped about it for a few minutes tonite:
Here are a few videos of songs that we got to hear at the recital today, though I think the students did even better than most of these performances!
La Zingara
Gia il sole dal gange: Look at all those rowdy opera concert-goers! Who knew?
For Good from Wicked: My new favorite song!

Welcome to the Enrichment Lifestyle Blog! I'm so glad you're here. :) I'm Erica Johns, and I love to encourage homeschool moms and help them enjoy more of the beauty of the arts in everyday life.
About me: I started my homeschooling journey in 1997 and graduated the last of my six children in 2021. Amidst all the hard work, crazy days, uncertainty, and lost pencils, what I think we really gained was the gift of a lifetime: TIME TOGETHER. So awesome! Click my pic to learn more.
